Or rather, a passing of the torch. From Justin Achilli, Shane DeFreest, and me (Mark Rein•Hagen), to Tobias Andersson Sjogren and Martin Ericsson – the NEW White Wolf.
And I do trust that everyone has heard the good news about the World of Darkness being sold to Paradox in Sweden, and White Wolf being rebooted. I can say, categorically, that I both respect and trust the new guardians of the world, Martin and Tobias, and can tell you that great things are coming. We wish them all the best in the journey ahead!
I met them all this last weekend in Germany, in a castle just outside of Cologne. It was a wonderful event bringing together many of the license holders for the World of Darkness, the new owners, and a whole bunch of fans (me included). It culminated with a fantastic LARP in the great hall.
What a weekend! I had a great time, but I don’t remember much!
In terms of the NEW White Wolf, Tobias is the business side the partnership, and while he is obviously very good at his job, he is no empty suit. He not only knows and understands the World of Darkness, he groks it. He will both make the trains run on time and make sure they are full of all the goodies we all crave. Martin is a true believer, and if I had to invent a person to be the perfect lead storyteller for a new edition of all the games, I could not have made someone more suited than he. He and Tobias are going to bring it home for us folks!
The first game they are going to publish is, obviously, the new edition of Vampire: The Masquerade. Martin and his team are already hard at work on it. He told me a lot of his ideas on what he wants to do, and I gotta say, bravo. Really interesting and cool stuff, edgy and transgressive in the very best of ways.
I have been getting a lot of questions about what will be changed with this new edition of Vampire, and all I can say is, ask them! Martin asked me to write an introduction to the new Vampire, and that I am more than happy to do, but I strongly believe that fresh new minds need to move the setting forward, and other than being a resource and a sounding board, I intend to stay the hell out of the way! Of course later on, I might have an idea or two for a supplement or a card/board game, but that’s WAY down the line.
For now, we all need to give the new team both breathing room and our full support on the delicate work of creating a KILLER new edition, and rebooting the franchise. I have total faith in them, I hope you will as well.
To be clear, Shane DeFreest and By Night Studios are still very much an ongoing concern, moreover Shane has been helping the new WW learn more about the international WoD LARP community, and Justin Achilli is still doing freelance for Onyx Path Publishing, which is also very much still involved in producing World of Darkness products.
Honestly, things couldn’t be going better for World of Darkness and White Wolf. I could not be more pleased. We are going to see some great things coming soon, and I for one, can’t wait to see what is in store!
